Tips for mothers to be

It’s important to have support around you whether it’s your partner, family, friends, or groups in the community. Complete a wellbeing plan, just in case you need to reflect on it in the future.

  • Find out about groups in your local area before your baby is born. Apps such as HOOP and netmums are useful. Baby groups, baby massage, breast feeding support, bounce and rhyme and book bug might be in your community.
  • It’s good to be self aware of how you are feeling and when to seek help. This is a tool which can help – NHS Mood self-assessment tool.
  • About 20% of women experience mental health problems before, during or after pregnancy, it may take different forms – learn more.
  • Learning relaxation techniques can be very important during labour and when the baby is born. The free app Head Space helps you incorporate relaxation into your life.
  • You may find that relaxation techniques may help you from feeling overwhelmed and that you can be receptive to your baby – The Social baby video.
  • It’ll be surprising what you baby can do – Baby milestones: 1 to 6 months.
  • If your labour is traumatic its important to talk about it, with professionals, with your birth partner and in online groups where you feel safe.
